Ants are one of the most common pests found in Australian homes.

There are hundreds of known ant species, broadly divided into two main groups: Black Ants and Brown Ants.

Black ants, also often known as garden ants, house ants or common ants, only have one queen and live in colonies of around 4,000 to 7,000 workers – although they can get as big as 15,000! The average black ant can live up to around 12 years. Their size varies depending on whether they are a worker (3-5mm long), drone (5-7mm long) or queen (6-9mm long).

Brown ants are generally smaller, between 1–3mm, and are a reddish-brown colour.

Ants are scavengers who are constantly on the lookout for food, which is why they try to get into our homes. They create nests inside cavities between building levels, inside walls, roof voids and moisture affected timber.

Ants Treatment

Pest control for ants often includes an interior and external treatment.

Interior treatment usually includes ant baits which combine an attractant and a poison. These baits are designed to be transferred between the worker ants and ultimately taken back to the nest where eradication of the entire ant colony is achieved.

External treatment around access areas includes localised or barrier band insecticide application, and ocassionally, placement of specific ant bait gels and granules to areas of ant activity e.g. ant trails and around nests.
